Elizabeth von Arnim is a terrific writer whose works can be enjoyed by "girls" as well as by grizzled old men. I had never heard of Elizabeth von Arnim. The title alone proclaims it to be a "girly" book. I read (listened to) this book only because Nadia May was the narrator. ![]()

![]() We have a family tradition of reading this book at Christmas, and even though my son is eighteen now, he still makes sure it's part of our stack of Christmas books ("A Pussycat's Christmas", by Margaret Wise Brown is another-I think I'll go review that one, too, with the same recommendation). ![]() I actually start choking up when Mowser decides she needs to go with Tom, and by the time they come back into the harbor I'm pausing quite frequently to collect myself and dab my eyes. Other reviewers have said it all, and I agree, from the weeping to the wonder. ![]() Buy it now, while you can, because even really great books go out of print (I still regret lending my copy of "Need A House? Call Ms Mouse", which I never got back and now goes for $70 used). Don't get it from the library, or borrow it from a friend. I say this to lend weight to my imperative-buy this book. ![]() I don't have the shelf space to accommodate new ones, so an acquisition usually means getting rid of something. I am very selective these days, when it comes to buying books. ![]() ![]() It encourages children to wash themselves after washing the animals, and even reluctant bathtakers can really get into it. The washcloth is a bit small but really cute with the key character. The book itself is made of squishy waterproof material, so it will endure bath time and float in the water, making it easy to read and play with in the tub. If caregivers are feeling bold, they can sing it to little ones (the song it is based on is the Barnyard Dance, which is a charming kids song in its own right). With familiar characters in the adorable cartoonish Boynton style, this book is an absolutely delightful and interactive twist on the original song. What I loved: This is such a clever and fun bath time book that is perfect for toddlers and preschoolers. ![]() On each page, they then clean off the animal before they reach the end and clean themselves. It comes with a washcloth featuring the cow from the first page that instructs children to get their washcloths ready. Even without, this is a clever bath toy that invites children to play and enjoy washing up. ![]() For fans of the song, they will appreciate the rhythm set to some new text. ![]() BARNYARD BATH! is an absolutely delightful bath toy/book twist on Barnyard Dance. ![]() ![]() Intricate PlotĪ major plus to Eyes is its mystery. The theme had potential to be monotonous as it involves a series of pages with one more (or less) hippo on each page, but Boynton did a good job of varying the illustrations and what the hippos are doing on each page so it is enjoyable and humorous. ![]() The story involves counting up to nine and then backwards from nine to one again. The text is beautifully rhythmic and melodic and the pictures are bright and cute. Hippos Go Beserk is a humorous story of what happens when a lonely hippo decides to call some friends for a party. Boynton's familiar style can be seen in scads of other delightfully nonsensical titles, including Barnyard Dance! and Moo, Baa, La La La!. ![]() The sturdy board book will withstand lots of eager counting fingers, and maybe even a berserk hippo or two. Lively, cute new illustrations complement this edition, with big numbers (one through nine, and nine through one) boldly placed on the corner of each page. In clusters of nine, eight, seven, six, and so on, the hippos depart, finally leaving the one hippo "alone once more, the other forty-four." The well-loved Sandra Boynton wrote this tribute to silliness in 1977, inspiring generations of the very young to learn to count. Before the night is through, a houseful of hippos (and one beast) has joined the one hippo for a boisterous bash. Soon three more hippos are at the door, bringing along another four. until the one calls two other hippos on the phone. ![]() ![]() ![]() Snooki shares her obsessions (her bed, Viva Glam Gaga bright pink lipstick, sci-fi movies) and some juicy behind-the- Shore secrets (which season was her favorite, what it was like to wake up in a jail cell in season two, why the house smells like alcohol and dog’s butt).
